Recently, the launch of its AI assistant, Le Chat, on mobile app stores generated considerable buzz, especially in its home country. French President Emmanuel Macron even encouraged citizens to download Le Chat over competitors during a TV interview, highlighting the national interest in the company's success.

The company was founded by three individuals with strong backgrounds in AI research at major US tech firms: CEO Arthur Mensch (formerly Google DeepMind), CTO Timothée Lacroix, and Chief Scientist Guillaume Lample (both formerly Meta). Co-founding advisers include figures from the French tech scene, like Jean-Charles Samuelian-Werve and Charles Gorintin (from Alan), and former digital minister Cédric O.

Open Source: Mistral's Approach

Mistral AI employs a mixed approach to open source. While its premier models (like Mistral Large 2) are proprietary for commercial use, the company offers several "free models" with accessible weights under the Apache 2.0 license. As of early 2025, Mistral AI has raised approximately €1 billion (around $1.04 billion) in capital through a combination of debt and equity financing. Key funding rounds include a record-breaking €105 million seed round in June 2023, a €385 million Series A six months later valuing the company at $2 billion, and a €600 million round in June 2024, pushing its valuation to $6 billion.

Strategic Partnerships

Mistral AI has forged several key partnerships to expand its reach and capabilities:

What's Next for Mistral AI?

Co-founder Arthur Mensch has stated that Mistral AI is "not for sale" and that an Initial Public Offering (IPO) is the ultimate goal. Given its substantial funding and high valuation, an IPO seems more likely than an acquisition, especially considering potential sovereignty concerns.

However, the company must significantly scale its revenue to justify its $6 billion valuation and effectively compete long-term against heavily funded rivals. Mistral AI's journey as a European AI challenger remains one to watch closely.
